What is Renewable Gas?
Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) mainly consists of methane - the same as traditional fossil fuel derived natural gas - but is generated from industrial and household wastes.
How is Renewable Gas Produced?
Renewable Gas can be produced through a natural process called Anaerobic Digestion (AD) where bacteria breaks down organics in the absence of oxygen.
On an industrial scale this means that feedstocks such as animal slurry, food scraps and sugar bagasse are added to a covered tank or lagoon. With agitation and a small amount of low grade heat to treat the liquid, the resulting gas can be collected, cleaned, and purified to produce a gas that is nearly identical to its fossil fuel derived alternative.

AD isn't new! - It's proven!
AD isn't a new invention, sewerage treatment plants have been using it for decades! However, recently AD has been used to generate gas from other organics due to a better understanding of the process.
Because AD occurs naturally untreated animal slurry and organics such as food scraps that go to landfill can generate fugitive methane emissions that have 28 times the global warming potential of CO2!
Therefore AD can be considered a form of cash-positive carbon capture technology producing a fuel that can be sold to the grid or burned to produce electricity and heat as well as a high nutrient fertiliser.
